Ah.
Yet another letter from a first book contest I failed to win. I have lost my optimism about these things. Every poem from In Another Castle has now been published -- from print journals like the American Poetry Review and Fence to online journals like No Tell Motel, Octopus, etc. You can see most of my publication history in my sidebar. I've been there. I don't believe the thing will ever be published as the full project that it is. It will be partially my own fault if I fall off the map now -- I'm not planning on sending to contests anymore. If someone wants to read my manuscript, they're welcome to. (I think maybe I'll even put a link to the PDF of it here on the blog.) If they want me to pay them to read it, they can take a hike. I've had enough of editors who tell me that they like my work and encourage me to enter their contests. I've never even made it into the list of finalists in the contests of presses where my work was supposedly appreciated. I've heard it all and I just don't care anymore -- and don't picture me with a tear in my eye as I write this. It's a beautiful day here in San Diego -- a fine day to sit down and write about nineteenth century geology and it's aversion to grand narratives.OK. I've read this and it does sound ... whiny. I do hate to whine, but I'm sticking to it anyway. For now.
