chapbooks

I'm thinking of starting My Vocabulary Press and publishing chapbooks of some of the poets we feature. Is this a good idea? Is the world already flooded with too many chapbooks? I'm not sure.

Personally, I always like it when a chapbook comes across my desk. Especially the small edition, no frills chapbooks put out by small presses and reading series. They're fun, and I like them better than most full-length poetry books. (This won't be happening too much anymore since I am giving up my job here in special collections in order to do more research.)

I'm printing things again -- or I will be soon. So I was thinking I could do covers and artwork, etc. The insides, I don't know how I would do the text. I don't really want to print them. I don't have time to set type anymore, and I don't have the equipment to do photopolymer plates. So this is one thing I'll have to solve. I'm kinda inclined to pull one of my typewriters (from my own special collection) and use it for the copy.

I don't know. Suggestions? (None will come, since I'm sure everyone has given up reading this blog by now.)

Matt Shindell . . . didn't we take a class as undergrads once upon a time? Or did we just know one another via Norman? I love the chapbook press idea. The only thing is chapbooks are only worthwhile if they're beautifully done, no? Like yours. I don't know the first thing about printing them, but hopefully your press will do beauty books. The rarer the better. I'm with you on the little collection I can carry around like a worn artifact, my sack of teeth poems, my amulet of poems on an old leather string. A little kiss from my nowhere, Miguel Murphy
